Bravo dives back into the dating pool with its reboot of the iconic series “Blind Date.” In the age of social media where preconceived notions dominate and dating.

First Dates is returning to film in Manchester – and producers are looking for local couples to be extras. The hit Channel 4 dating show began filming at Spinningfields restaurant The Refinery in March before lockdown brought production to a halt. Now the cameras are set to start rolling again – although it could be a very different series, with strictly no smoochies while social distancing remains in place.

The show sees singletons matched up for a blind dinner date – with an impressive success rate that has led to several engagements, marriages and even a baby. But nobody wants to go on a date in an empty restaurant – and so producers are casting for couples from Manchester as ‘background daters’. They’re on the hunt for loved-up 18 to year-olds from the local area to add to the atmosphere in the venue while filming takes place. The new restaurant location and regional production base provide exciting opportunities for the series.

Netflix’s New Dating Show Bets You Can Handle the Awkwardness of Watching People Go on First Dates

As social media and apps have taken over dating, the whole process has become more and more mediated. Setting up a dating profile requires curating and selling yourself like a brand or a reality TV character. And daters often google each other and check out Instagrams before meeting up. One would think that these shifts would prompt reality dating shows to organically update themselves for the times.

Ah, First Dates; it’s one of our ultimate guilty pleasures when it comes to our TV schedule – but how much of the Channel 4 show is scripted?

Though it masqueraded as low-key and unfussy, a show that simply eavesdropped on blind dates, its approach was more high-concept than it first appeared. One person went on five dates, then chose their favourite for a second date. So far, so familiar. But the editing made it all look as if it took place on the same night, in a sort of hopeful-romantic Groundhog Day. And so each date took place at the same place, in the same clothes, often with the same questions and jokes. These were edited to look as if they were all happening at once, and it was borderline arthouse.

If it was supposed to be a comment on the repetitive grind of modern dating, then it was a surprisingly effective one. Still, despite its conspicuous oddness, it was more subtle and less flashy than other shows of its ilk. It let conversations linger, it waited to see if a kiss might be initiated in the back of a cab, fully embracing the awkwardness of that particular dance, and it let incompatible couples come to the realisation that they were not meant to be at an excruciatingly authentic pace.

At just 30 minutes or so, it was entirely compelling. It felt right at home in the age of apps. The dates were not surface at least not by design, though sometimes they ended up that way , but they were brisk, efficient. If not quite the equivalent of a swipe left or right on TV, then it is right at home in a culture in which that is normalised.

First dates can be hard enough for people who stammer. Imagine being filmed for a television programme whilst on one! Participants know nothing about the date they have been set up with other than what they look like, from an emailed photograph. I found out about it via a link on the BSA Facebook page , saying that Channel 4 were looking for people who stammer to audition.

Ten minutes later I had a phone call from one of the producers, Joe, who gave me a brief phone interview daunting I know, but Joe was very nice and made me relaxed as he knew I stammered. He asked me about myself, what kind of girls I like and how my stammer affects me. He seemed really interested, and a few days later I got the call to go to London to audition. I was worried that I was going to come across as a bumbling, crying idiot and people were going to laugh at me.

The audition was basically an extended filmed version of the phone interview, with a bit more emphasis on my stammer. It was very relaxed and Joe was eager to get me on the show, and a week later I had confirmation that they wanted me.
